WIN a class trip to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast!

Simply share your Plastic Free July class activities with us for a chance to WIN this great prize!

Plastic Free July is a movement close to our hearts at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast. Our love of the ocean and it's incredible inhabitants goes hand-in-hand with reducing the amount of plastic waste that finds its way into our waterways each year.

We love to see our visitors getting on board with reducing their plastic footprint and some of our biggest advocates for reducing waste are the younger generation- see our Facebook post from 2019 on eco warrior Abbie Boyle who donated $500 from recycling containers!

For Plastic Free July 2020, we are offering your class the chance to win a free, self-guided trip to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast. All you have to do is share with us the Plastic Free July initiatives you are undertaking at your school. These could include:

  • Undertaking a clean-up at your school or in your local area
  • Working on a piece of art made from recycled plastics to raise awareness of how plastic impacts our environment
  • Committing as a class or school to the Plastic Free July challenge.
  • Looking at ways to reduce your school's plastic waste and sharing your plans and goals.
  • Finding some great alternatives to plastic products your school currently uses.
  • Plus any other creative ways you are celebrating!

To enter send details of your activities, including written descriptions, photos and videos if you have them, to the education team at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast by Friday 14th August. We will then select a lucky winner!

Email us at SLSCMarketing@merlinentertainments.com.au for more information or to enter.

Terms and Conditions: class size is limited to 35 students, larger classes would be welcome but will be required to pay for any extra students at a cost of $14 per student. One free adult will be admitted per ten students, additional adults wanting to attend will be charged at $19.50 each. The class visit must be take place before July 30th, 2021. During 2020, visits can only be undertaken on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Only one entry per class is permitted, however multiple entries per school from different classes will be accepted. Entries close at 11.59pm on 14th August 2020. Winners will be contacted during the last week of August 2020.

Plastic Free July

Are you students up for the Plastic Free July challenge?

Here are a few simple ideas to get you started!
  1. Say no to plastic straws. These are one of the biggest culprits of plastic waste. If you love drinking through a straw, invest in a plastic-free, reuseable alternative.
  2. Commit to waste-free Wednesday. Set students the goal of packing a lunch without any single use plastic. (see below for a great activity to introduce this idea!)
  3. Bring a bottle for the bubbler! Using your own bottle rather than buying water or juice in plastic saves all those single-use bottles from ending up as waste. Plus water is the healthiest option!
  4. Make a written commitment to the challenge! Go to plasticfreejuly.org and sign up your school up.

Reducing plastic in school lunchboxes can be a great place to start your plastic free journey! It saves our oceans, saves money and usually means healthier lunches too! View our lunchbox activity below!

To help you start a discussion with your class we've produced a plastic facts poster with some incredible stats on plastic use. It also includes instructions on how to make beeswax wraps, a brilliant plastic free alternative for lunchboxes and at home.
