Little Blue Penguins

At SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast

Meet some of our Resident Penguins

Little Blue Penguin Jonah

Meet Jonah

This handsome young male is only six years of age. He can be found diving the depths of his pool. He is enjoying his new exhibit as this depth is new to him. Jonah has a love for anything that shines or moves. So if you see a dashing penguin it is likely to be him. Jonah is full of confidence in the water but out on land he is a true “gentlemen”, always allowing others first. Jonah is easy to identify as he is large with a beautiful plumage of feathers

Little Blue Penguin Hilda

Meet Hilda

One of the smallest penguins with the biggest personalities. Four year old Hilda hardly comes out on land unless it’s to eat or communicate with her fellow penguin friends. She is forever swimming and socialising. Hilda tends to enjoy the company of males and will always welcome any new penguins with open wings. She enjoys spending her time with Jonah and Ota and will often be the last to come and feed as she would rather swim.

Little Blue Penguin Sapphire

Meet Sapphire

Talk about SWEET. This slightly scruffy penguin is always trying to mingle with her trainers. She adores the company of humans, and is often known as the talker. Her fellow roommates show a lot of respect to Sapphire. You can always see Sapphire when there is food around. This little gem is one of our biggest eaters and she is only TWO.

Penguin Fun Fact:

Little blue penguins are mainly nocturnal as they perform most of their activity during the night creating small groups of about ten members or less. They are not migratory and stay close to their colonies most of the time.

Unlike larger species, they can dive only to a depth of 230 feet for approximately 35 seconds, but usually they do it in depths ranging from 59 to 102 ft.
